When going on holiday, most families can’t wait to hit the road to reach their fun filled holiday destination far away from the city rush. So everything is packed, the kids are all buckled in and the only thing that lies between you and your festive euphoria are those few km’s of road ahead. And for mom, dad and the kids, that’s where the fun or frustration begins.
One of South Africa’s leading car rental companies, and one of Stars in Transition’s preferried suppliers, Europcar, brings you some fun and interactive games that parents and kids can play in the car to make that road trip a little more interesting and exciting.
Depending on the ages of your children, try following some fun games below:
Younger children
Memory Master: Tell your child to stare at a picture in a magazine, a page of their favourite book, a road map, or the contents of your purse or nappy bag. After 60 seconds, your child should look away and you, as Memory Master, can quiz your child about what he or she has seen. Then you can switch and your child can be the Memory Master and quiz you. It goes without saying that the driver of the car should not be participating in this game, as it requires concentrating on an image.
The Counting Game: Count blue bakkies, silver cars, or white buses find 10 horses, count signs, billboards, police cars. Count water towers. There are endless possibilities for the fun that this game holds.
I spy: An age old favourite, I spy can keep the car blues at bay. While in the car ask your children to look at billboards, road signs, license plates and buildings to find the letters of the alphabet in order. For instance, to find an ‘A’-the child might see Apple and say it aloud, then move on to finding a sign or billboard with the letter B.
Older children
The ABC Game: The object of this game is to complete the alphabet first. As you see the letters on billboards and license plates you shout out your letter and point. Once a letter has been claimed other players cannot use the same letter. Make it harder by limiting to only license plates or billboard signs.
The Theme Song Game: This game is both silly and fun. One person hums the tune to a favourite TV show e.g. survivor, idols, and the one who guesses right does the next song.
Guess what I am: One person states they are either a person, place or thing and the others then ask questions (are you blue, can you speak, do you bark, can you be eaten, etc) until they guess what the person is, then they are next.
And to make sure that the family actually reaches the holiday destination, Europcar offers GPS rentals from all its branches when reserved in advance. GPS units are a must have especially if it’s the first time going to a remote town. The GPS is simply plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter point and operated through a touch screen. All that’s left for the family is to get into the car, type in your destination and enjoy the ride with the family with some fun filled games!
