The smallest province in South Africa, with the largest city, Johannesburg. The city of Johannesburg, also known as Egoli, ‘the place of gold’, was originally built on gold mines and is the economic heart of the country, with gold still forming the backbone of the South African economy today.
A great family day out can be had at Gold Reef City, a period mining town south of Johannesburg, where the mining past comes alive, being recreated around the headquarters and shaft no. 14 of the historic Crown Mines. You can tour the mine, watch demonstrations of gold-pouring and enjoy tranditional gumboot dances.
