Kwazulu Natal

The Zulu Kingdom offers the visitor an interaction of natural wonders, modern facilities, fascinating cultures and a rich history. A destination with towering mountains of the Drakensberg in the west to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean in the east.

Durban is the gateway to this unique destination. A cosmopolitan city, where east meets west, inviting you to play, shop and relax. Children will absolutely love uShaka Marine World, a ride in the Zulu Ricksha and the beachfront stalls, which sell traditional arts and crafts. You can also enjoy the excellent entertainment on offer at the city’s theatres or take a township tour.

The beaches, all along the north and south coast (including the Wild Coast) make for holidaying with the children a pleasure!

There are 2 Heritage sites in Kwazulu Natal – The Drakensberg, with its jagged peaks, carved by the erosive forces of wind, sun and rain, provide a dramatic backdrop to the Kwazulu Natal Midlands. The once-upon-a-time Voortrekkers fancied they saw visions in the play of light on these rocks and gigantic dragon would come to life, and so the mountains were called the Drakensberg ‘Dragon Mountains’. The second is the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in South Africa. Here the family can enjoy walking trails along the edge of the lake, and the chance to watch hippos and crocodiles or fish along the coast.

Kosi Bay, in the most northern parts of St Lucia, witnesses turtle migration between November and January, and on moonless nights they head on to the beach to lay their eggs – sheer delight for children for whom this is an experience of a lifetime.

The primary game reserves in Kwazulu Natal are Hluhluwe-Imfolozi; Itala; Mkuze; Ndumo; Phinda and Tembe Elephant Park, offering a wide variety of animals, from waterbirds to cheetah.
